The children in Year 2 are so excited that their new topic is Bright Lights, Big City.  They have had the opportunity to learn about the Great Fire of London.  They began by finding out about the fire and then acting out the events as a class.  The children really enjoyed thinking about ways to be creative and re-enact how the fire spread around London.  During the Engage Stage of the topic the children became bakers, just like Thomas Farriner, who was the baker who is credited with starting the Great Fire of London.

The children, guided by the adults in Year 2, followed a recipe to make bread.  They helped to weigh the ingredients, looking carefully at the scales.  The ingredients were then mixed and left to prove.  Once the dough had risen the children were able to shape their own piece of dough into a shape of their choice.  The shapes were then baked in the oven ready to go home with the children at the end of the day.  They were delicious!

The children used this experience to develop their understanding of how to read and write instructions, their mathematical understanding of measurement, their scientific understanding of how materials change when mixed and heated and in so doing, deepened their understanding of this famous event in the history of London.
