10 Feb Future Astronauts in Year 2?
As part of their Moon Zoom topic the children in Year 2 have really enjoyed reading the story Margaret and the Moon by Dean Robbins. It is the true story of Margaret Hamilton who loved numbers as a young girl. She knew how many miles it was to the moon (and how many back). She loved studying algebra, geometry, calculus and using maths to solve problems in the outside world.
Soon maths led her to MIT and then to helping NASA put a man on the moon! Margaret hand wrote code that would allow the spacecraft’s computer to solve any problems it might encounter. She worked on Apollo 8, Apollo 9, Apollo 10, and Apollo 11. Without her code, none of those missions could have been completed.
Having become very familiar with the story, the children in Year 2 used their wonderful writing skills to retell the story in their own words. They thought carefully about the new language they had learned and ensured they used noun phrases to add interest to their writing. They also thought carefully about joining their ideas together with a range of conjunctions.
We hope you enjoy reading a few versions of Margaret’s story.
