15 Oct What amazing ice-cream we made!
Throughout the week beginning 8th October Year 2 and their family and friends made ice-cream, keeping in theme with our topic ‘Beachcombers.’ Every child created a plan for the ice-cream that they wanted to create. They planned the flavours, the toppings, who they wanted to make it for and whether they wanted a cone or a bowl. Each child and their grown up carefully followed the recipe to make ice-cream in a bag. The recipe required the children to pour half a cup of milk into a small Ziploc bag, adding their chosen flavouring and sugar. This was then sealed and placed inside a large Ziploc bag which contained plenty of ice and 6 tablespoons of salt (a very important part of the process). The children and their grown ups then had to vigorously shake the bag and its contents for at least 10 minutes. Once this shaking was complete the ice-cream was ready to eat! The children consulted their plans to decide whether they wanted a cone or a bowl and then indulged in their delicious ice-creams.
Once the ice-cream had been consumed the children and their grown ups used thinking hats to evaluate their ice-cream. They used the white hat to write what they know about making ice-cream, the red hat to write how they felt about making ice-cream, the green hat to write about how they would improve their ice-cream and the yellow thinking hat to write the good points about their ice-cream. Every child and their grown up thought carefully about the process and produced a lovely piece of learning. Every session was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part and was such a valuable experience for the children involved.
