23 Feb We had a visit from our local Member of Parliament, Elliot Colburn!
We were delighted to welcome Elliot Colburn and Jo White to our school! Thank you to Barry Williams for arranging the visit.
Elliot hosted an assembly for the Key Stage 1 children and taught us about what it means to be an MP. He spoke to us about what he does during his day, especially when he goes to the Houses of Parliament, what laws are and how laws are made. We even had the chance to practise voting by shouting ‘Aye’ or ‘No’! We ended our assembly by thanking Elliot and Jo by singing a song and presenting them with gifts of plants that we have grown at school.
The children asked very insightful questions such as:
How old are the Houses of Parliament?
How long does it take to pass a law?
When passing something into law, why does it move between the House of Commons and the House of Lords?
How long has Elliot Colburn been an MP?
Some asked practical questions about how he spends his time and where he eats. Future Members of Parliament perhaps?
