17 November, 20240 LikesWelcome to the year group page for Year 2. Here you will find information about the curriculum, news and events.
There are three classes in Year 2 – Dolphin Class, Panda Class and Tiger Class. Each class has 30 children.
The children in Year 2 are enthusiastic learners who are confident in exploring and using the entire learning environment to its full potential. They move between all 3 classes accessing the independent challenges with confidence. They also complete some fantastic learning in the outdoor learning environment, showing that they are confident in learning anywhere. The children have lots of good behaviours for learning embedded into their daily routines at Beddington Infants’ School and use their growing knowledge and their curiosity to lead them to produce thoughtful pieces of learning.
In Year 2 the children continue to learn both inside and outside. Over the week they will learn in the role-play area, library and other classrooms, just like through the rest of the school.
Throughout the week the children will complete learning as part of an adult focus group in their own
classroom. The children have whole class lessons and experience several guided group sessions during the
week in English, Maths and other curriculum areas. These sessions provide instant feedback on their
learning, which can easily be tailored to the individual child’s current level of understanding and need.
Through discussion with the child, the adult is able to assess his/her understanding and move him/her on
to the next step, making maximum use of the learning time.
Each learning activity has challenge card, which explains what the children need to do in order to be
successful at the given piece of learning. These activities always have a suggested extension to enable the children to
further develop their skills and cater for the different needs of children with a range of learning styles. The supervised independent learning activities enable the children to practice and apply skills learnt during adult focus activities the previous week or to develop a deeper understanding of a learning objective for that week. They also provide the opportunity for children to develop basic core skills such as fine or gross motor skills, spelling, writing, reading or maths.
The completion of the independent challenge ensures that the children use and apply the new learning. It also develops their ability to learn without direct interaction from an adult, therefore developing their concept of themselves as an independent learner.
This also helps the children to develop other key skills
such as co-operation, resilience and problem solving, whilst taking responsibility for their own learning.
The children in Year 2 have a lot of excellent learning experiences across the Year. Normally, the curriculum includes trips to the beach, local places of worship and Hever Castle. There are also normally plenty of opportunities for families to join the children in their learning. In previous years families helped us to make ice cream, develop our writing skills, make bread, develop our reading skills, build space buggies and used saws to cut twigs and create dinosaur skeletons. All the children thoroughly enjoyed all of these learning experiences and having experienced them, they were able to use them to enhance their learning. Each term the learning in Year 2 is developed through a topic from the Cornerstones Curriculum, please click below to see the curriculum overview for 2022-2023.
